Posting this primarily to myself as a reminder of the purpose of MyeCommerceJourney. The purpose of this website is to post reviews of web and ecommerce related products. Hopefully along the way with the information that I learn I'm able to pickup useful tips and information that will help us develop our ideas. With every post I am requiring of myself that I review at least one product, and by product I am referring to a website that helps us achieve whatever it is that you or I might want to achieve out of a website. Here's the product that I'm reviewing for today's post... MyeCommerceJourney was going no where with my old PC. I had the concept, but I discovered that my older computer was just not up to the challenge of developing a website, at least not without extreme patience. So thanks to the folks at Dell, with a little help from my wallet, I purchased a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. I really feel that this product has all of the bells and whistles, and was a super value. Features included a DVD/RW, 128MB NVidia Video Card, an Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.2GHz,4MB Cache,800MHz FSB), 8 in 1 media reader, and integrated WiFi (Broadband Cellular is also an option). I love this laptop so much. The price is extremely reasonable. I'm going to refrain from posting a dollar amount because I'm sure that the price will continue to go down, but I will post a link to a product review on the dell website below. Kudo's to you Dell for making a fine laptop Dell Vostro Review

The website had to go into a brief hiatus. I ran into issues with my old computer. In some of my earlier blogs I wrote that Yahoo! SiteBuilder was a great tool... well it has it's place. SiteBuilder helped me get my initial page off the ground, and it helped me learn the basics of building a website. The problems that I found with SiteBuilder was that it did limit how dynamic my site could be, and it was a little too CPU intensive for my 4 year old computer. Because it ran so slowly on my old PC it took me hours or days to create pages that should have only taken minutes or hours. We'll I'm back with a new laptop, and I've found a new site building application. The new application is called Joomla! Joomla is called a Content Management Application. Joomla is going to allow me to create the dynamic sort of site that I want MyeCommerceJourney to be, complete with easy to design menus, headers, footers, polls, user login/logout, and many other plugins. I will write more on Joomla later. For now I'm going to get back to the business of developing a website with reviews of everything that goes into building an eCommerce website.

There are two key factors to consider when you are looking at Bandwidth. First how much disk space does your web hosting provider allow, and second how much does your provider allow you to transfer. Yahoo Hosting for example allows you 5 GigaBytes of Disk Space and 200 GB transfer bandwidth. This means I can have up to 5 GB of files hosted on the server and up to 200 GB of files transferred between my website and visitors every month. There are some sites that offer much much more for less money, but for now these limits are hundreds of times more than I forsee that I will need for the near future. Be wary of web hosting providers that offer unlimited disk space or data transfer. There are a few web hosting providers out there that advertise unlimited bandwidth in a practice that is knows as over booking. I have heard horror stories of people purchasing from some of these providers with plans to use maximize the bandwidth use only to find out later that unlimited doesn't really mean unlimited. The good news is that almost all of the reputable web hosting providers provide a nice control panel that will allow you to easily measure what percentage of the existing bandwidth you are using. 5GB of Disk Space and 200 GB transfer is more than enough for 98% of all basic web sites. It is a great starting point for me, and if I need to upgrade later it is not a difficult task.

More important than how eMail and websites work is how they help you create your brand. Imagine this... you are applying for a job. After three rounds of interviews the hiring manager has narrowed down the candidates to you and one other person. Both of you are equally qualified for the job and have similar resumes however there is one difference... at the top of your resume in the contact section is your email address and website,

and www.joewbowman.com. The person with whom you are competing for the job has no website but they do have an email address,

Who do you think is going to get the job? Clearly Joe won out over BigSportsFan. I might suggest that Joe would win out over BigSportsFan even if BSF had a better resume and was slightly more qualified. Why? Because Joe started branding himself with a website and email address. Joe showed that he is technically savvy and has the initiative to build a website with his name and basic information about himself. I'm sure that this situation plays itself out hundreds of times every day. I know because I've been on both sides of the interviewing table and I've seen it for myself. Why would you not want to give yourself, your child, or your business the advantage of having all of your communication go out with a brand name that is going to leave a positive impression in peoples mind? Whether or not you ever do anything with a website it is impressive it is to have

listed on your resume or similar articles. 2/6/08 - Posting an update to this... I was at the bookstore this weekend and picked up a book called UR Brand. A very interesting concept... I'm very interested in reading this book and expanding on this thread, but I would also like to hear the feedback from any of you who've read this book. |
